Received an email from Ventra about my pass having a negative balance - but the card has an unlimited balance. Hmmm? :shock:

Dear XXX,
The Ventra transit account for your card ending in 2847 currently has a negative balance. This card may no longer be valid for travel on CTA and Pace--add more transit value today to be sure you can keep riding.

A negative balance can occur if there wasn't enough value in your Transit Account when you boarded a bus or entered a train station turnstile.

If you're using a pass and also used your card to pay for an additional rider traveling with you, please remember that passes only cover the first rider and that additional riders' fares are deducted from your transit value balance.

If you have enabled autoload for transit value and did not receive an email letting you know value has been loaded to your account, please sign in and check that autoload is enabled per your preferences.

How to load value:

Online: Sign into your account at

Set up autoload for transit value: Autoload for transit value automatically loads more value into your transit account whenever your balance gets low. (You can also configure autoload for passes, too!)

In person: Load value at vending machines in every CTA train station and at select locations, or at more than 1,300 Ventra retailers around town, including many drugstores, currency exchanges and neighborhood convenience stores! Find a Ventra retailer
