iPhone iMessage slow to type / laggy?

When I open any iMessage and start to type, the first character shows but its like a 3 second delay for other other characters. I deleted all my iMessages but they still lag.
Potential fix: this seemed to help: Settings > General > Reset > Reset Keyboard Dictionary.
